When breastfeeding isn’t going to plan

This post is sponsored by Lansinoh®

Breastfeeding has been one of the greatest joys of motherhood for me. I love those quiet moments, just my baby and I, as she stops sucking to look up at me and smile. I love how her little hands flail about and seeing her milk drunk after her morning feed.

But these joys and delights of breastfeeding can often be overshadowed by the challenges, whether it is trouble getting the milk flow to start, mastitis, engorgement, or just a feeling that you aren’t doing it right. It can be particularly isolating when you are a new mum and learning a completely new skill with a baby who can’t tell you what is wrong.

If this is you, and for whatever reason you are having some breastfeeding challenges, here are a few things you can do.

Seek help

There is so much help available for breastfeeding mums. The Australian Breastfeeding Association is one support, which I have used on a number of occasions when I have needed help. They run the National Breastfeeding Helpline which runs 7 days a week, staffed by volunteers trained in breastfeeding education.

If you have a medical issue, you will need to visit your GP for treatment. Your GP is also a good source to visit if you are having supply issues or emotional concerns relating to breastfeeding.

Always seek help and know that you are not alone. You will be given layers and layers of advice from friends and relatives, often conflicting. Seek out solutions that work for you and your baby.

Utilise breastfeeding products

From the makers of Lansinoh® HPA® LANOLIN, the product clinically proven to accelerate healing of sore, cracked nipples, is a range of products to support breastfeeding mums! One of these is Lansinoh® THERA°PEARL® 3-in-1 BREAST THERAPY. Segmented to conform to the breast, Lansinoh® THERA°PEARL® provides both hot and cold therapy to help with common breastfeeding challenges.

Used hot before a feed, Lansinoh® THERA°PEARL® encourages let-down and helps the milk flow. It can also be used around a breast pump to reduce the time spent expressing. Lansinoh® THERA°PEARL® can be microwaved, making it a convenient alternative to warm face washers or warm showers!

Used cold between feeds, Lansinoh® THERA°PEARL® helps reduce pain and swelling from engorgement or mastitis. It is a convenient alternative to frozen peas and frozen nappies!

Be kind to yourself

Have you heard the saying that you need to look after yourself before you can look after baby? That means resting, staying hydrated and eating a nutritious diet. While it is easier said than done, looking after yourself will go a long way to helping you deal with any challenges that breastfeeding, or motherhood in general, throws your way. Surround yourself with a support network of people who can help you out when you need it. Be kind to yourself and know that the issues you are facing are not your fault and help is available.

What are your tips for handling breastfeeding challenges?

Lansinoh® THERA°PEARL® 3-in-1 BREAST THERAPY is available in pharmacies, RRP $29.95.
